Sage wrote a fantastic poem tonight that is perfect for our very snowy day today:
white snow everywhere you see the snow falling ever so slowly
twirling whirling and shooting into the frosty air
jack frost nipping at your nose
the soft snow landing gently on the ground
you hear the children laughing merely

Winter Festival and Advent Spiral
Tonight my good friend Tonya and I hosted a Winter festival and Advent spiral at my house. I have never attended a Waldorf Advent spiral so I read up on it and it turned out to be a beautiful experience. We had invited 3 additional families to join us (10 kids). The evening started with sewing a star and making gingerbread cookies. I have a picture of the star, but all the cookies are gone of course!
This is what the spiral looked like this afternoon when I was testing how it would looked. I was very excitted to see how pretty it turned out and could not wait till the evening when it would be aglow with candle light.
The spiral started with all the children and moms coming into the room quietly and joining hands around the spiral. Tonya and I then said a very nice blessing from the book TheTales of Tiptoes Lightly that starts off :
Bless this candle
Burning bright,
Bless its shining in the night.
Ryan's turn! Amazingly enough we did not need the bowl of water I set for " just in case emergencies"
The spiral was beautiful in the dark. Unfortunately this picture does not show that, but it was very peaceful. We all sang "This Little Light of Mine" and then guided all the kids to sit for the puppet show.
Tonya read the story "The Light in the Lantern" while I was the puppeteer. It was a nice story and the children enjoyed it.
At the end of the evening some of our friend stayed for a potluck dinner. We really had a wonderful time. Thanks to Tonya for Working together to make this happen and to Kim who stayed and helped me clean up !!

1st snow of the season
Friday night we had our first snow fall of the season. Who could resist going out to play! The neighbor kids eventually joined Sage and Ryan for a big snow fight. By big I mean using the shovel to throw snow on each other. Ryan went through 3 hats - he kept getting soaked!

1st Light of Advent
Tonight we celebrated the 1st light of advent :
The first light of Advent is the light of stones.
Stones that live in crystals, seashells, and bones.
Once Ryan was ready for Pj's I settled to mood of the house by turning of the lights and lighting the candles on the table. Then following the lantern's light we walked into the kitchen where our Advent table is set up. I told a story of the festival of stones as we lit the 1st advent candle. After that we walked Ryan up to bed with our only light from our lanterns.
Winter is a time for reflecting inwards and finding our inner peace as the days grow shorter. Having the advent is a great way to stop and come together as a family and absorb the quietness around us.

Sunday Morning
It is mornings like these that makes me happy that I made the decision 3 years ago to turn "the tv off". Instead of sitting watching cartoons, Ryan was making this tower and adding all kinds of details. It was great to watch him while I drank my coffee.
Friday Nature walk
We stayed close to home for our Friday nature walk. There is a great trail behind our through the woods with enough uphill climbing to keep it interesting. We did not walk to far but spent a lot of time walking on the fallen trees. Who needs a gym for balance beams when you have several strategically fallen trees to balance on.
